How can zoology collections be reimagined from the perspectives of indigenous communities in Brazil? This project invites Guarani and Kaiowá indigenous communities to engage with the Grant Museum of Zoology Collections at UCL, in order to collaboratively develop an online exhibit that explores participatory approaches and innovative methods of presenting zoology and natural history collections to a wide public audience. In doing so, this project aims to challenge the historical exclusion of indigenous voices from the practices of natural history curation, narration and display, while exploring how innovative exhibition methods can engage broader and more diverse publics.

By inviting Guarani and Kaiowá elders to select specimens, discuss their responses, and reimagine alternative methods of presenting selected zoological and natural history items from the Grant Museum collections at UCL, this project examines the diverse epistemic and ontological frameworks that shape contemporary zoological and natural history collections and conservation practices, while opening these collections to the participation of diverse and historically absent voices in the Grant Museum’s historical, narrative, and material presentation of its collections.
